# Nap transition checker: is my baby ready to drop a nap?

Every baby drops naps on their own timeline, but there are typical windows: 4 to 5 months for the 4-to-3 drop, 6 to 9 months for 3-to-2, 13 to 18 months for the classic 2-to-1, and around 3 to 4 years for the last nap. Enter your child's age and current nap count to see readiness signs and what to expect.

Age in months

Current nap count

8-month-olds on 3 naps are in the typical window for the 3 to 2 naps transition.

**What the transition looks like:** Morning nap and early-afternoon nap only. Wake windows stretch to about 2.5 to 3 hours.

**How long it usually takes:** 2 to 4 weeks

Readiness signs to watch for:

- Third nap is refused or pushes bedtime past 8pm
- Wake windows lengthening naturally
- Early wakings from the last nap being too late

## How this works

Nap transitions happen when your baby's sleep pressure changes faster than their schedule. Wake windows lengthen, one nap starts crowding the next, and bedtime starts drifting late.

Age ranges here come from consolidated pediatric sleep research. Individual babies transition earlier or later, and that is normal.

A transition takes time. Expect an early bedtime for a week or two while your child adjusts to a longer awake day.

What if my baby refuses the last nap for a few days?

One rough patch isn't a transition. Look for a pattern over 7 to 10 days before making a change.

Do I drop the morning or afternoon nap first?

For the 2-to-1 transition, the morning nap goes and the midday nap stretches longer, usually around 12:00 to 12:30.

Should I use an earlier bedtime during a transition?

Yes. A 30- to 60-minute earlier bedtime for the first 1 to 2 weeks helps your child adjust without becoming overtired.

My baby is fighting a nap but too tired without it. What now?

Try a bridging nap: a shorter contact nap or car nap on rough days. It buys time without formally dropping the nap yet.

Can I skip the 3-to-2 nap transition?

Some babies do. If nights and mood stay good on 2 naps, that's fine. Trust the schedule that fits your baby.

What about the 4-to-3 transition?

This one usually happens quietly around 4 to 5 months as sleep consolidates. Many parents don't formally notice it.

When do most toddlers give up their nap?

Age 3 to 4 is typical. Some hold onto quiet rest time much longer, which is still restorative.

Is early waking a sign of a nap transition?

It can be, especially if the last nap of the day is too close to bedtime. Try shortening or capping that nap first.
