## How this works

Wake windows come from developmental sleep research summarized by pediatric sleep consultants and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations on total daily sleep for infants and young children.

The numbers in this tool are averages, not targets. Every baby's tolerance is a little different. Watch your child, not the clock — sleepy cues (staring off, ear pulling, sudden clinginess) mean the window is closing.

Safe sleep first: always place your baby on their back, on a firm flat surface, with nothing else in the sleep space, until their first birthday.

###

What is a wake window?

The stretch of time your baby is awake between one sleep and the next, including feeding, play, and getting them down. It grows as your baby grows.

How do I know if a wake window is too long?

Overtired signs include a second wind of hyper energy, arched back, crying that ramps up quickly, and trouble settling to sleep even when clearly exhausted.

How do I know if it's too short?

Undertired babies fight the crib, take a 20-minute nap and pop back up, or babble happily for an hour before falling asleep.

Should the last wake window be longer?

Yes. Most babies need a slightly longer wake window before bedtime to build enough sleep pressure for a long overnight stretch.

Do wake windows apply to newborns?

Newborns follow their own rhythm and often can only stay awake 45 to 60 minutes. Feed on demand and follow their cues rather than a strict schedule.

My baby refuses the suggested nap time. What now?

Try shifting the window by 10 to 15 minutes in either direction for a few days. Consistency matters more than hitting an exact minute.

Is bedtime the same every night?

The clock time will move around depending on how naps went. If naps were short, an earlier bedtime often prevents an overtired night.

When do wake windows stop mattering?

Around age 3 to 4, most children drop the last nap and settle into a stable bedtime. Wake windows matter less once the day is one long block.
