What nightmares look like

Nightmares happen during REM sleep, most often in the second half of the night. Your child wakes up upset, scared, and looking for you.

They can tell you what happened, sometimes in vivid detail. They want closeness, a light, or a hand to hold. Comfort works.

What night terrors look like

Night terrors happen in deep non REM sleep, usually 1 to 3 hours after falling asleep. Your child may sit up, scream, thrash, or seem terrified.

Their eyes may be open, but they are not really awake. They will not respond to you the way they usually do, and they will not remember the event in the morning.

What to do in the moment

For nightmares, go in. Hold, name the feeling, offer a light or a comfort object, and stay until they settle.

For night terrors, do not try to wake them. Keep them safe, dim the lights, speak softly if at all. Most terrors end on their own in 5 to 20 minutes and the child falls back into deep sleep.

What helps prevent both

Overtiredness is a common trigger for night terrors. Protecting the last wake window and an early enough bedtime helps.

For nightmares, a warm bedtime with connection and a short chat about the day helps process big feelings before sleep. Scary content before bed can raise the risk of nightmares in young children.
