Safe Sleep Checklist
AAP aligned safe sleep basics, printable and free for every parent.
What it is
A one page reminder of the safe sleep basics, in plain language. Print it, stick it near the crib, and share it with anyone who cares for your baby.
When to use it
Before baby comes home, at every sleep setup, and any time a new caregiver is doing bedtime. When you are tired, a checklist beats memory.
How to use it
- Print the checklist and place it near the sleep space.
- Walk through it out loud before the first sleep of the day.
- Share the link with grandparents, sitters, and partners.
- Re read it if anything about the sleep space changes.
- Trust your gut and call your pediatrician with questions.
The printable
Every sleep
- Baby on the back, every nap and every night, until the first birthday.
- Firm, flat, level sleep surface that meets current safety standards.
- Fitted sheet made for the mattress, and nothing else on top.
Nothing loose
- No pillows, blankets, quilts, bumpers, or stuffed animals in the sleep space.
- Use a wearable blanket or sleep sack instead of loose covers.
- Skip inclined sleepers, in bed loungers, and couches for sleep.
Space and setting
- Room share without bed sharing for at least the first six months.
- Smoke free and vape free air, before birth and after.
- Offer a pacifier at nap and bedtime once feeding is going well.
