Is gentle parenting the same as permissive parenting?

No. Gentle parenting holds limits — it just leads with connection and attunement. Permissive parenting removes friction and often skips the limit.

Can my style change from child to child?

Yes. Temperament, birth order, and life stage all pull for different responses. This is normal and not a failure.

What if I keep landing in authoritarian answers?

Often that means your nervous system is running high. Notice your own state before your child's. Regulation is upstream of every parenting move.

Acknowledge the disappointment, offer a warm off-ramp.

6. Your child spills a full glass of juice.

"Grab a towel — I'll help." Clean up together.

"Accidents happen. Are you okay?" Then clean up.

Wave it off and clean it yourself.

"How many times have I told you to be careful?"

7. Homework is a nightly battle.

Predictable time and place, help available, they own the doing.

Sit with them, keep the vibe warm, work through it side by side.

If they don't want to, let them skip it.

No screens or play until it's done, period.

8. Your child talks back.

"That tone doesn't work with me. Try again."

"You sound frustrated. What's going on?"

Ignore it and move on.

"Do not talk to me like that. Go to your room."

9. Your child breaks a house rule you had agreed on.

Name the rule, follow the agreed consequence, no lecture.

Talk about what led to it and repair together.

Let it slide this time and remind them of the rule.

How this works

The four styles come from Diana Baumrind's classic research (1966, 1971) and subsequent work by Maccoby and Martin. They map two axes: warmth or responsiveness, and structure or demandingness.

Every real parent uses every style at some point. What this quiz shows is the pattern in this season, with this child, on these days. It is not a personality label.

Regulation-first parenting is not a fifth style. It is a foundation any style benefits from: attend to your own nervous system, then bring what you already believe in.
